Julie Hooper

Interim Vice Chancellor, University Development and Alumni Relations, UC Berkeley

Julie is the interim vice chancellor for University Development and Alumni Relations at the University of California, Berkeley, and president of the UC Berkeley Foundation. She provides campus-wide philanthropic leadership, including guiding activities of approximately 500 advancement staff and 25 different schools, colleges, and campus units.

Previously, Julie served as the executive vice president and chief development officer for the Environmental Defense Fund, where she directed enterprise-wide advancement strategy and a global team of more than 140 professionals. Before that, she helmed UC Berkeley’s development and alumni relations team as vice-chancellor for 10 years, under three different chancellors. Her leadership of Berkeley’s Light the Way campaign generated $7.37 billion—the highest campaign total for any public university—in support of UC Berkeley’s mission as one of the world’s premier public universities, creating a historic, transformative impact on the campus and around the globe. She also held senior positions at the University of Texas, Austin and in various non-profit agencies in Texas, including serving as executive director of the Colorado River Foundation. 

Julie has a master’s degree from the University of Georgia and a BA from Boston University. She has served on the boards of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Sustainable Food Center.
