Co-hosted by Bill Gates and Breakthrough Energy, Nat Simons, Laura Baxter-Simons, and their team, and the Climate Leadership Initiative (CLI), Funding Climate Impact showcases high-impact, ready-to-fund climate solutions that—with increased philanthropic support—can accelerate progress and deliver the outcomes we need to tackle the climate crisis.
Climate change is a global challenge that demands collective action to achieve the massive transitions we need. While many solutions exist, change is not happening quickly enough. Philanthropy is an essential catalyst for positive change—helping to build a better, more equitable future based on clean energy. Funding Climate Impact highlights a carefully curated selection of urgent and ready-to-fund solutions, vetted by experts and supported by experienced climate philanthropists.
Reducing methane emissions is one of the fastest ways to slow global warming and can be done with cost-effective technology and know-how available today. The Global Methane Hub is a collaborative philanthropic effort to support rapid, systemic reductions in methane emissions across the energy, agriculture, and waste sector. It pools and channels funds worldwide to advance research and data development, influence policy, and mobilize financing.
The shipping industry runs on dirty fossil fuel and generates a billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, roughly 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Without urgent action to decarbonize the sector, shipping emissions are projected to grow significantly and push climate goals out of reach. A philanthropy-supported consortium of strategic partners is working to rapidly reduce shipping industry emissions; build a viable commercial market for zero-emission ships by 2030; and achieve a zero-emission shipping sector by 2050.
To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we must reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This will require innovation and unprecedented technological transformations. The Breakthrough Energy Fellows program focuses on the earliest and highest-risk stage of climate technology development, identifying and funding the world’s most promising scientists and entrepreneurs working on groundbreaking decarbonization technologies. Philanthropic support ensures Fellows have the research and development funding, educational resources, and network they need to realize the full potential of their technologies.
We held our second Funding Climate Impact event on April 25, 2023 with a 90-minute session featuring John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation and the following climate solutions: Invest in Our Future presented by Aimee Witteman; Allied Climate Partners presented by Mimi Alemayehou; Mission Possible Partnership presented by Faustine Delasalle.
