Sue Tierney
Senior Advisor, Analysis Group
Sue, a senior advisor at Analysis Group, is an expert on energy economics, regulation, and policy, especially as it relates to the electric industry and climate mitigation policy. She has consulted to businesses, government, system operators, Tribes, environmental groups, foundations, and others on energy markets and economic and environmental regulation.
Previously, she served as the assistant secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Energy, and in Massachusetts she was the secretary of environmental affairs, a commissioner at the Department of Public Utilities, and head of the state’s Energy Facilities Siting Council.
She currently chairs the boards of ClimateWorks Foundation and Resources for the Future, and is a director of the Barr Foundation, World Resources Institute, the Energy Foundation, and the Keystone Center. She currently serves on two committees of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the Committee on Modernization of the U.S. Electric Grid, and the Advisory Committee on the Climate Communications Initiative) and was previously a member of other committees relating to the electric grid. She previously chaired the DOE’s Electricity Advisory Council as well as the external advisory council of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. She was co-lead author of the energy chapter of the 2014 National Climate Assessment, and served on the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s advisory board. She earned a Ph.D. and master’s degree in regional planning at Cornell University.
