Director of Operations
Joe Hayes is director of operations for the Climate Leadership Initiative (CLI) and plays a pivotal role in building the operational systems to support staff and external stakeholders. He partners closely with the leadership team in architecting the tools to tailor opportunities for donors to advance the most promising solutions to the climate crisis. He is equally dedicated to fostering CLI’s cultural values, team cohesion and staff development.
Joe brings more than 15 years of organizational management experience in guiding impact-driven entities in the environmental, legal and educational sectors. At The Nature Conservancy (TNC), he managed the California chapter’s physical locations, stewarding resources to meet the growing demands of climate resilience programs and innovative science solutions. He also led operations at Roberts Enterprise Development Fund (REDF), a venture philanthropy group that invests in social enterprises to empower marginalized communities, and helped to scale the fund’s impact during a growth phase.
Before settling in California with his wife and two energetic young boys, Joe received a BA at Skidmore College with a dual degree in English and History and worked in academic publishing at Columbia University. His passion for impact grew out of his first role at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) where he supported frontline ambassadors in promoting global reproductive healthcare in 150 countries.
