Our Founding Funders
After the adoption of the 2015 Paris Agreement, our founding funders—a group of generous individuals and foundations—decided that addressing the climate crisis at a level corresponding to the urgent threat required more philanthropic investment, quickly and at the scale that would truly lead to transformational change. In 2019, the Climate Leadership Initiative was formally launched, and today CLI continues to work closely with these original funders.
Ambassadors are individuals who provide guidance to CLI staff and support efforts to engage philanthropists who are new to climate giving. By sharing insights and advice based on their own experiences, ambassadors serve as important and trusted role models, particularly to those new to the field, and inspire others to get involved.
Based on the interests of the philanthropists with whom we work, we source and vet solutions from the broader climate community across sectors, geographies, and strategies. CLI is not a grant-making organization; we connect philanthropists directly to the organizations implementing programs that range from promising early-stage ideas to proven opportunities ready for scale.
